Before you touch it

A garage door spring stores enough force to hurt someone. Here's what the three most common emergencies look like and what to do while you wait.

What you seeUsuallyWhat to do now
You heard a loud bang from the garage, like a gunshotSpring repairDo not pull the red emergency release while a spring is broken. The door can drop fast. Leave it where it is and call.
The opener runs but the door doesn't moveOpeners & remotesIf the door reverses or won't close, check that nothing is blocking the two small sensors near the floor before you call. A smudge or a bumped sensor is a common cause.
The door is crooked or one side is higher than the otherOff-track, cables & rollersDon't run the opener on a crooked door. Unplug the opener and keep people and cars away from it until it's fixed.

How a repair call works

  1. Call or text

Tell us what the door is doing. A photo or a 10-second video by text helps a lot.

  2. Get a price range

We tell you what it most likely is and a price range on the phone. No charge for that.

  3. Pick a time

We give you an arrival window. Same-day is often possible; we'll say so if it isn't.

  4. Pay when it works

The technician confirms the price before starting. You pay after you've tested the door.

The NLS promise

  • No work starts until you've approved the price.
  • No payment until the door works and you've tested it.
  • No pressure to replace a door that can be repaired.
  • Ask for Leo. You talk to someone who has fixed garage doors, not a call center.

How we work: we schedule your job and send a vetted local technician, and we stay responsible for the result.

Where we work

Chicago's North Side, the North Shore, and the northwest and western suburbs out to the Fox Valley. 114 towns in all.

Questions people ask

Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?

Please don't. The opener isn't built to lift the full weight of the door, and pulling the emergency release can let the door drop. Leave it closed. If your car is stuck inside, tell us when you call and we'll prioritize it.

Do you charge for estimates?

Phone estimates are free: we tell you the likely problem and a price range. If a technician comes out, the visit is $79, and that's credited in full when you go ahead with the repair. Estimates for new doors and openers are always free.

How fast can someone come out?

It depends on the day and your location. When you call we give you a real arrival window. Same-day is often possible for spring, cable and off-track calls.

Which openers do you work on?

The common residential brands, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman and Linear. If you're not sure what you have, text us a photo of the motor unit's label.

Can't talk right now? Leave your number.

We call or text you back with a likely cause and a price range. If it's urgent, calling is faster.
